Ride Intelligence Report (RiR) — Field Guide

Less time reading gauges. More time riding.
The RiR appears on every ride event page and gives you a weather-based riding assessment before you leave the driveway. Here's how to read it fast.

The RiR pulls live hourly weather at three points along the route — Start, Mid, and End — and turns that data into a single Ride Score plus plain-language alerts.


⚡ 30-Second Read — How to Use the RiR on Ride Day

Step 1 — Check the Score
90%+ means great conditions. Below 70% means look closer at what's pulling it down. Below 40% means check the override status and seriously consider your plan.
  Step 2 — Check the Status Label
If it says WET RIDE, COLD RIDE, HIGH WIND, or HOT RIDE — that overrides the score entirely. Gear accordingly or reconsider the ride.
Step 3 — Glance at the Segment Ring
Mixed colors mean conditions change along the route. Blue means rain ahead. Grey means cold ahead. A rough mid arc might mean a tough stretch but a clean destination — or vice versa.
  Step 4 — Check the Real Feel Reading
Real Feel is what the temperature actually feels like on the bike — wind chill and humidity factored in. It often differs significantly from raw air temperature. This matters for what gear to use on the ride.

Step 5 — Check the Alerts Bar
The dark bar at the bottom shows RiR-calculated alerts plus any active official NWS watches and warnings along the route. If it says anything other than "No active weather alerts," read it before you roll.

The Ride Score — What It Means and How It's Calculated

The Ride Score is a single number from 0–100% reflecting overall riding conditions averaged across all three route points. It starts at 100 and weather penalties are subtracted using exponential curves — meaning conditions have to be genuinely bad before they seriously hurt the score, but once they cross key thresholds, the penalty accelerates fast.

Temperature
Comfort zone is 70–82°F — zero penalty in that band. Outside it, penalty grows exponentially in both directions. A 90°F day costs more than twice a 86°F day. Maximum penalty: 42 points.
  Precipitation
No penalty below 15%. Slow rise to 5 points at 35%, then a steep cliff to 16 points at 40%, then aggressive scaling above that. 40% chance of rain is where it starts to matter. Maximum penalty: 32 points.
Wind
No penalty below 15 mph. Exponential from there — gentle through 25 mph, steepening toward 45+ mph. Maximum penalty: 18 points.
  Heat + Humidity (combined)
Only activates when temp exceeds 87°F and humidity exceeds 73% simultaneously. Neither alone triggers it — both must be present. Maximum penalty: 18 points.

Stacking Penalty: When multiple bad factors are active at once, an extra penalty is added on top — 4 points for two active factors, 10 for three, 18 for all four. The score is calculated at each route point, then averaged together.

Sustained Rain Penalty: If precipitation probability is 30% or higher at all three route points, a bonus penalty is added reflecting the fact that rain following you the entire ride is worse than rain at just one point. Heavier at 40%+ across all segments.

Wet Road Penalty: If confirmed rainfall (actual mm) is detected in the 3 hours before your departure time at the start point, a wet road penalty is added — 3 points for damp, 7 for wet, 12 for very wet. Slick roads from recent rain are a real hazard even when the sky is clearing.


Ride Statuses — What Gets Displayed

The status label appears in the center of the gauge cluster. Four override statuses are checked first and trump the score entirely — if any of these apply, the score number is secondary:

WET RIDE Precipitation probability reaches 70% or higher at any point on the route. Rain is likely — not just possible. Gear up or reconsider.
COLD RIDE Temperature drops below 45°F at any point. This is gear-critical cold. Heated gear, layers, and grip warmers territory.
HIGH WIND Max wind exceeds 45 mph at any point. Crosswinds at this level create real handling challenges, especially on exposed roads and bridges.
HOT RIDE Temperature exceeds 105°F at any point. Heat exhaustion risk. Hydration stops are not optional at these temperatures.

If none of those apply, the score determines the status on a green-to-red spectrum:

GREAT WX 95–100% Near-perfect riding conditions. Stop reading this and go ride.
GOOD WX 90–94% Excellent conditions with very minor imperfections.
FAIR WX 80–89% Good ride. One factor is working against you but not significantly.
BORDERLINE 70–79% Conditions are acceptable but noticeable. Check which factor is pulling the score and gear accordingly.
SUBPAR WX 60–69% Multiple factors stacking. Experienced riders will manage; less experienced riders should take note.
POOR WX 40–59% Conditions are working against you. Know your limits and gear up aggressively.
BAD WX 15–39% Genuinely bad riding conditions. Consider postponing.
EXTREME WX 0–14% Extreme conditions. Strong recommendation to postpone.

The Route Segment Ring — What the Colors Mean

The ring around the center Ride Score is divided into three equal arcs: Start, Mid, and End of your route. Each arc is colored independently based on the single most dominant weather penalty factor at that location. A white dot marks the departure point.

This is the fastest way to see if conditions change along the route — three green arcs means clean all the way through. A blue end arc means you're riding into rain. A grey start arc means a cold morning that may warm up later.

● Green Ideal conditions. Temp in the comfort zone, low wind, low precip, manageable humidity. No dominant penalty factor.
● Blue Rain is the dominant factor at this point. Shade deepens as precipitation probability approaches 100%.
● Red/Orange Heat is the dominant factor. Shifts from orange toward deep red as temperature climbs above 82°F.
● Grey Cold is the dominant factor. Light grey for mildly cold (near 65°F), darkening toward charcoal as temperature drops toward freezing.
● Amber Wind is the dominant factor. Deepens toward burnt orange as wind speed climbs above 15 mph.
● Purple Rare. Combined extreme heat and humidity is the dominant factor — requires both temp above 87°F and humidity above 73% simultaneously.

The Four Weather Icon Lights

Four small icons sit below the gauge cluster. They are dark when inactive and glow when triggered. Each fires independently based on averaged route-wide conditions. Hover over any icon on desktop for a tooltip explaining the trigger.

☀ Heat Lights up when average temperature exceeds 85°F. Consider mesh gear, extra hydration, and planned shade stops.
❄ Cold Lights up when average temperature drops below 65°F. Layers, heated gear, and grip warmers recommended.
≋ Wind Lights up when max wind anywhere on the route exceeds 20 mph. Watch for exposure on bridges, overpasses, and open stretches.
🌧 Rain Lights up when average precipitation probability reaches 30% or more. Pack rain gear. WET RIDE override status activates if any point hits 70%.

Weather Alert Banner — What Can Populate

The dark card below the gauge cluster shows either "No active weather alerts" or one or more colored pills. The banner has two sources — RiR-calculated alerts based on the forecast data, and official NWS (National Weather Service) watches and warnings fetched live for each route point.

RiR Calculated Alerts — these reflect the worst single point anywhere on the route:

RAIN Precipitation probability hits 70% or higher at any route point. Rain gear is not optional at this threshold.
HIGH WIND Max wind exceeds 35 mph at any route point. Significant handling challenge, especially for lighter bikes on exposed roads.
EXTREME HEAT Temperature exceeds 100°F at any route point. Heat exhaustion risk escalates rapidly — plan shade and hydration stops aggressively.
EXTREME COLD Temperature drops below 40°F at any route point. Near-freezing conditions with possible ice on bridges and overpasses.
WET ROADS Confirmed actual rainfall (measured in mm) detected at the start point in the 3 hours before departure. Roads may be slick even if the sky is clearing.

NWS Official Alerts — color-coded by severity, these are pulled live from the National Weather Service for each route point. Hover any pill for the full alert headline.

■ Warning (Red) Imminent or occurring threat. The highest severity NWS classification — e.g. Tornado Warning, Flash Flood Warning. Take seriously.
■ Watch (Orange) Conditions are favorable for a significant weather event. Not imminent, but possible within the watch period — e.g. Severe Thunderstorm Watch.
■ Advisory (Yellow) Less serious but still hazardous — e.g. Wind Advisory, Dense Fog Advisory. Conditions are inconvenient or risky for unprepared riders.
■ Statement (Blue) Informational — e.g. Special Weather Statement, Hazardous Weather Outlook. No immediate threat but worth being aware of.

Multiple alerts from different categories can appear simultaneously. NWS alerts are deduplicated across all three route points — if the same watch covers your entire route, it shows once.
